The 2020 UHSPSI Invitational will still be happening virtually! We had to cancel the in-person competition due to Covid-19, however workshops will now be happening online and teams will submit video entries of poems to compete in the invitational. All original presenters, including Bill Moran, will be giving teen writing workshops online. Bill will also be doing a virtual workshop just for teachers. Please Register by April 30th at 1 p.m.. To register, send an RSVP to Steve Haslam at [email protected] - those who register early will receive an invite in their inbox two days prior to their event.
We are excited to announce that the 6th Annual Utah High School Poetry Slam Invitational will be held May 1st, 2019, with a special, NCTE sponsored workshop for teachers on April 30th. Our two-day event will feature writing workshops from Terisa Siagatonu, Muna Abdulahi, & Chelsea Guevara; a performance workshop for competing poets from Denice Frohman; and a special pedagogical workshop for all language arts teachers from Bill Moran.
Last year’s gala and UHSAA push resulted in new paths for our organization. The UHSAA notified us that we will need many more schools to have regularly competing teams before we can get their approval. This year, we had enough schools competing in the Salt Lake Valley that we are able to have two regions of competing teams each month. We will continue to grow, but we need willing teachers to find the poets that are waiting in their schools.
All of this year’s visiting poets will feature in the evening of our state high school poetry slam competition. This year's competition and workshops are open to the public and will be held at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan, with the teacher workshop being held at the downtown Salt Lake Public Library Auditorium. Please contact Dr. Steve Haslam at [email protected] if you have questions.
